What is the Veterans History Project?

The VHP was unanimously enacted into law by the Congress on October 27, 2000.  The project honors our nation's war veterans and those who served in support of them by creating a lasting legacy of videotaped interviews and other documents chronicling their wartime experiences and how those experiences affected their lives and America itself.  The interviews will be preserved forever in the national archives in the Library of Congress for future generations to learn from.

What added value does Americans Remembered bring to the table?

In addition to organizing and video recording the interviews, Americans Remembered provides a duplicate copy to the interviewee family for their family's personal archives.  Americans Remembered has an objective of completing 10,000 interviews over the next three years.  This will not happen without contributions of time and money from individuals, businesses, corporations, and foundations.  Please carefully consider our request for help.

Are my donations tax deductible?

Yes, as a 501(c)(3) corporation, all donations to Americans Remembered, Inc. are tax deductible.

How will my donation money be used?

It costs about $100 to complete three interviews (we always try to do three interviews in succession so that we can capitalize on setup time as well as skill transfer).  This is for supplies and processing work only and does not include the interviewer's time or travel.  The recording and copying equipment, the processing time, supplies, postage, office space and administrative expenses are all included in the cost.  The time required to complete and prepare the interview to be sent to the Library of Congress is four to seven hours.

Will you teach me how to do interviews?

Yes, we have a starter kit that we send out to all volunteers with helpful tips on getting started.  The kit includes the packet developed for interviewers by the Veterans History Project, a package of real life suggestions on the interviewing process based on our experience doing interviews over the past year, and copies of all the required forms to accompany the videotaped interview.  We have found that once you have done three or four interviews, you will be very comfortable and develop your own style.  And, we are always available to help you get started.  We will provide consultation by phone or email when you need it - our top priority is to assure that our volunteers are successful.

Where do I find veterans to interview?

Look around you.  There are family members, friends, neighbors, fellow workers - veterans are everywhere.  We are interested in veterans from WWI through the current War on Terror - all veterans from all wars and all branches of service are prime interview candidates.  Many of our volunteers also solicit veterans to interview through their church, civic and veteran organizations.  Don't forget that we also want to preserve memories of those home front workers who supported our military in all our wars.
